AUXILIARY POWER UNIT - A12011

APU (Auxiliary Power Units) are the systems which give energy so that the systems on the vehicle could operate actively when the vehicle ignition switch is off and provide climatization of the air within the vehicle by operating vehicle air conditioning system and the required energy for the vehicle on armoured military vehicle. These systems which are integrated to armoured vehicles, have the capability to carry on all the activities on the vehicle even when vehicle engine is out.

Different from generators, these systems which have no battery and fuel tank, could be embedded into the vehicle or could be assembled to outer shell. APU designs could be made between 2 kW and 100 kW as per customer’s choice. By adding hydraulic pump and air conditioner compressor to these systems which gets the fuel from vehicle tank and first ignition electricity from vehicle battery, they can cool inside of the vehicle without operating the vehicle engine. By extending the vehicle engine life and saving fuel, it can actively operate weapon systems, vehicle computer, fire suppression systems, power distribution unit, CBRN systems on the vehicle.

Thanks to the remote-control unit; IP7 control unit with electronic card which provides the user with all the errors and information on digital screen, is designed and APUs have been turned into smart systems. On this control unit, the user can easily reach on digital screen the information such as overheating status, fuel level, pressure level, DC current, battery voltage status. Besides, there are 2 different starting options as automatic starting and manual starting on control unit.

NERO develops, qualifies, produces and fields systems and components for a wide range of tracked, wheeled, stationary and airborne military platforms. These include main battle tanks (MBT), self-propelled howitzers (SPH), armored / infantry fighting vehicles (AFV / IFV), armored personnel carriers (APC), mines resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles, tactical and tactical support vehicles (TV / TSV), utility and utility support vehicles (UV / USV), rocket launchers, shelters, tents, helicopters and aircraft.

Auxiliary power units (APU)

The need for auxiliary power units (APU) on military vehicles is becoming more common in order to:

  • Support the demand for add-on Hi-Power Electronic Equipment that increases the power drawn beyond the initially planned consumption
  • Enable Silent Mode Operation of the vehicle – Low Noise and Thermal Signature
  • Reduce the logistics and operational costs of the vehicles – less expensive main-engine hours and fuel. APUs very low Life Cycle Cost (LCC) assures a fast return on the investment

NERO has Developed and Fielded a wide range of APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) for external and internal installation on military vehicles. These have a power range of 2kW – 20 kW with output voltage of 24/28 VDC as well as high AC and DC voltages. The APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) can be based on either water or air cooled diesel engines depending the model and the application.

NERO APUs are provided as stand alone units or can be integrated with NERO’ life support systems (LSS-APU) providing NBC / CBRN protection and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC).

Advantages of NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) include:

  • Designed for heavy duty automotive operation in heavy dust conditions.
  • Constantly keep high performance while operated in extreme temperatures and high altitudes
  • Can be operated while the vehicle is stationary or in movement.
  • Very compact in size
  • Fully integrated with the vehicle fuel and control systems

A unique feature of NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) is their ability to operate as co-generation systems in conjunction with the vehicle’s main generator. In this mode, the APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) are continuously monitoring the vehicle’s power demands and provide power to fulfill any missing power. This operational mode is very useful where there is lack of power on existing vehicles due to new add-on equipment. In these cases the APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) save the upgrading of the vehicle’s main generators.

NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) are always tailored to meet each specific requirement while based on qualified and fielded solutions.
