EXPLOSION SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS
APU (Auxiliary Power Units) are the systems which give energy so that the systems on the vehicle could operate actively when the vehicle ignition switch is off and provide climatization of the air within the vehicle by operating vehicle air conditioning system and the required energy for the vehicle on armoured military vehicle. These systems which are integrated to armoured vehicles, have the capability to carry on all the activities on the vehicle even when vehicle engine is out.
In military vehicles, the purpose of the AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) is to provide power to the vehicle’s electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems when the main engines are not running. Additionally, it can be used during the vehicle’s pre-mission preparation processes such as testing weapons and equipment or cooling down the main engine.
The APU also plays an important role in emergency situations in military vehicles. For example, if the vehicle’s main engine is damaged or fails to operate, the APU can be activated to power certain systems and maintain the vehicle’s mobility. Furthermore, if a fixed power source is not available where the military vehicle is stationed, the APU can provide the necessary energy to increase operational capabilities.
NERO develops, qualifies, produces and fields systems and components for a wide range of tracked, wheeled, stationary and airborne military platforms. These include main battle tanks (MBT), self-propelled howitzers (SPH), armored / infantry fighting vehicles (AFV / IFV), armored personnel carriers (APC), mines resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles, tactical and tactical support vehicles (TV / TSV), utility and utility support vehicles (UV / USV), rocket launchers, shelters, tents, helicopters and aircraft.
Auxiliary power units (APU)
The need for auxiliary power units (APU) on military vehicles is becoming more common in order to:
NERO has Developed and Fielded a wide range of APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) for external and internal installation on military vehicles. These have a power range of 2kW – 20 kW with output voltage of 24/28 VDC as well as high AC and DC voltages. The APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) can be based on either water or air cooled diesel engines depending the model and the application.
NERO APUs are provided as stand alone units or can be integrated with NERO’ life support systems (LSS-APU) providing NBC / CBRN protection and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC).
Advantages of NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) include:
A unique feature of NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) is their ability to operate as co-generation systems in conjunction with the vehicle’s main generator. In this mode, the APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) are continuously monitoring the vehicle’s power demands and provide power to fulfill any missing power. This operational mode is very useful where there is lack of power on existing vehicles due to new add-on equipment. In these cases the APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) save the upgrading of the vehicle’s main generators.
NERO’ APUs(Auxiliary Power Unit) are always tailored to meet each specific requirement while based on qualified and fielded solutions.
In military vehicles, AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) is used to support high-power electrical and hydraulic systems in armored combat vehicles. Additionally, it is necessary for processes such as testing weapons and systems in the vehicle, or cooling down the main engine before a mission.
In many modern military vehicles, the APUs are located both in a soundproof compartment inside the vehicle and outside of the vehicle to reduce noise levels inside the vehicle and dissipate the heat generated during operation.
APUs can also be used in applications such as mobile radar systems, communication devices, targeting systems, and similar equipment.
The types of AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) used in military vehicles are generally divided into two categories: diesel and gas turbine.
Diesel APUs operate separately from the main engine of military vehicles and typically consist of an integrated diesel engine and generator. Diesel APUs are a popular choice due to their low fuel consumption, high efficiency, and long lifespan.
Gas turbine APUs, on the other hand, operate similar to jet engines, using a high-speed flow of gas to generate electricity. These types of APUs may be lighter and more compact, but have higher fuel consumption compared to diesel APUs.
APUs can also be designed in different sizes and power capacities to suit the needs of the vehicle. The types and capacities of APUs can vary depending on the operational requirements of military vehicles.
AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) used in military vehicles may have some features, including:
High power capacity: Due to the high-power requirements of military vehicles, APUs generally have high power capacities.
Low fuel consumption: To reduce operational costs of military vehicles, APUs are typically designed with low fuel consumption.
Durability: Military vehicles operate in harsh conditions, and APUs must be durable enough to withstand high temperatures, humidity, dust, vibration, and shock. These devices are made of sturdy materials that can resist these conditions.
Reliability: To meet the operational requirements of military vehicles, APUs are designed to be high-performing, low-failure-rate, and long-lasting.
Quiet operation: In most modern military vehicles, it is important for APUs to operate quietly. Therefore, they are equipped with sound insulation and vibration prevention features.
Integrated systems: APUs are designed to be compatible with other vehicle systems. For example, they can be equipped with electronic control units and automatic protection systems.
The test standards for AUXILIARY POWER UNIT (APU) used in military vehicles may vary depending on the country and region. However, some common test standards may include:
MIL-STD-461: This standard specifies the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. It is often used to ensure that APUs meet EMC requirements.
MIL-STD-810: This standard specifies the environmental durability requirements. It indicates that APUs must be resistant to vibration, shock, high temperature, humidity, dust, salt water, etc.
MIL-STD-704: This standard specifies the requirements for transitioning from AC power sources to DC power sources and energy management. APUs must meet these requirements for system reliability.
MIL-HDBK-217: This standard is used to estimate the life of devices in military vehicles. It can also be used to estimate the life of APUs.
These standards are used to test the performance and durability of APUs. Test results help determine whether APUs are suitable for use in military vehicles.

APUs can also be used in applications such as mobile radar systems, communication devices, targeting systems, and similar equipment.
Different from generators, these systems which have no battery and fuel tank, could be embedded into the vehicle or could be assembled to outer shell. APU designs could be made between 2 kW and 100 kW as per customer’s choice. By adding hydraulic pump and air conditioner compressor to these systems which gets the fuel from vehicle tank and first ignition electricity from vehicle battery, they can cool inside of the vehicle without operating the vehicle engine. By extending the vehicle engine life and saving fuel, it can actively operate weapon systems, vehicle computer, fire suppression systems, power distribution unit, CBRN systems on the vehicle.
Thanks to the remote-control unit; IP7 control unit with electronic card which provides the user with all the errors and information on digital screen, is designed and APUs have been turned into smart systems. On this control unit, the user can easily reach on digital screen the information such as overheating status, fuel level, pressure level, DC current, battery voltage status. Besides, there are 2 different starting options as automatic starting and manual starting on control unit.
