Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822

Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 is an onboard power generation system designed to ensure uninterrupted operation of armored military vehicle systems when the main engine is switched off. Integrated directly into military platforms, the A21822 enables continuous electrical supply, silent operation, and onboard climate control, allowing vehicles to sustain full operational capability under demanding mission conditions. Nero Endustries develops auxiliary power solutions engineered to support modern battlefield requirements and evolving vehicle architectures.
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 is designed to supply power to electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems of military vehicles without operating the main engine. It supports pre-mission activities such as weapon and system testing, engine cooling, and maintaining active onboard systems.
In emergency conditions where the main engine is damaged or unavailable, the A21822 enables continued operation of selected systems, preserving vehicle functionality and operational readiness.
Platform and System Integration
The A21822 is developed for integration into a wide range of military platforms, including tracked and wheeled armored vehicles, stationary systems, and airborne platforms. Compatible applications include main battle tanks, self-propelled artillery systems, armored and infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, MRAP vehicles, tactical and support vehicles, rocket systems, shelters, tents, helicopters, and aircraft.
Depending on platform requirements, the system can be installed internally within sound-insulated compartments or externally on the vehicle structure to optimize noise reduction and thermal dissipation.
Power Architecture and Configuration Flexibility
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 is designed to address increasing onboard power demand caused by high-power electronic systems integrated into modern military vehicles. The system supports silent mode operation with reduced acoustic and thermal signatures, minimizing main engine usage and lowering fuel consumption.
The APU is available in configurations ranging from 2 kW to 20 kW and can be tailored to higher power capacities based on customer requirements. It provides 24/28 VDC output as well as high AC and DC voltage options. Depending on the application, the system may utilize air-cooled or liquid-cooled diesel engine architectures.
System Integration and Co-Generation Capability
The A21822 can operate as a standalone auxiliary power system or be integrated with Nero Endustries life support systems, including HVAC and KBRN protection solutions. The system draws fuel directly from the vehicle fuel tank and uses initial electrical power from the vehicle battery, eliminating the need for a dedicated fuel tank or battery.
A distinguishing feature of the A21822 is its co-generation operating mode. When used alongside the vehicle’s main generator, the APU continuously monitors power demand and supplements power output as needed, preventing the requirement for costly main generator upgrades when new systems are added.
Design Characteristics and Control Systems
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 is engineered for heavy-duty automotive operation in dusty terrain, extreme temperatures, and high-altitude environments. Its compact design supports efficient integration into constrained vehicle layouts while maintaining full compatibility with vehicle fuel and control systems.
The system is equipped with an IP67-rated electronic control unit featuring a digital display. Operators can monitor system parameters including temperature status, fuel level, pressure values, DC current, battery voltage, and fault conditions. Both automatic and manual start options are supported, enabling flexible operation across mission profiles.
Test Standards
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 is designed and tested in accordance with the following military standards:
-
MIL-STD-461 for electromagnetic compatibility
-
MIL-STD-810 for environmental durability
-
MIL-STD-704 for power management and electrical compatibility
-
MIL-HDBK-217 for reliability and life estimation
These standards confirm the system’s suitability for long-term operation in harsh military environments.
Functional Role
Auxiliary Power Unit – A21822 enables armored military vehicles to operate critical systems without reliance on the main engine. It supplies power to onboard electronics, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, climate control units, weapon systems, communication equipment, fire suppression systems, power distribution units, and KBRN protection systems.
By extending engine life, reducing fuel consumption, and supporting silent operation, the A21822 enhances mission endurance, operational flexibility, and overall vehicle survivability across a wide range of military platforms.
